Make Urea Fertilizer at home

Fertilizing with urine may seem like a highly unusual venture. Nevertheless, human urine has been shown as beneficial for fertilizing tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage and maize, according to studies cited at the Popular Science website. Healthy human urine contains urea, which is high in nitrogen, a standard plant fertilizer. Urine also contains potassium and phosphate, other important substances for healthy plant growth. You can collect urine from yourself and your family or roommates, and have free urea fertilizer for your outdoor plants.

Initial Instructions

  • Instruct everyone involved in the project that they must not have any viral or bacterial infections when contributing to the urine collection. A urinary tract infection in particular can add bacteria to the fertilizer, which is not advisable. Also make sure everyone is instructed to keep any fecal matter out of this container. Everyone should thoroughly wash their hands before and after urine collection and usage to avoid spreading any germs they may not be aware of.

Urine Collection

  • Next, decide on a bucket with a lid to collect urine. Determine a one-gallon measurement by pouring in a gallon of water and marking a line at the corresponding level. Then dump out the water, and you now have your urine-collecting bucket. You and your volunteers can urinate directly into the bucket or go in a paper or foam cup and then transfer the urine to the bucket.

Urine Dilution

  • A second bucket will serve as your fertilizing pail. This should be a five-gallon bucket so you can properly dilute the urine, since urine is too high in nitrogen to add directly to plants without causing urea fertilizer burn. Once you have a gallon of urine collected, add four gallons of water along with 1 tsp. of baking soda to lower the acidic levels. You also can dilute 1/2 gallon of urine with 4 gallons of water and skip the baking soda. You may need to experiment to find the optimum dilution levels for different plants; a 10 to 1 ratio sometimes is best. For container plants, you'll probably need to dilute to 20 parts water to 1 part urine to avoid fertilizer burn.

Fertilizer Applications

  • You can apply the homemade urea fertilizer under the plants and around the entire root area up to once a week. Add your homemade urea fertilizer to your compost pile as well, because urea helps break down woody substances.
